It can be easy to find music that uses birds and flight as a metaphor, but not many that really speaks to us as therians. Here are a few songs and artists that do have songs that stand out to my mind.
KOTOKO, a Japanese pop artist, writes a lot of songs that focus on wings and flying. Her songs are in Japanese. Some songs to pay attention to: Hane (meaning feather), Wing My Way, Free Angels and Second Flight. Her video for Hane is also very powerful, the movements of her body really suggest that she is trying to be free and reach for the sky.
Owl City, an American music project by Alan Young, has some good flying and mystical songs with a hopeful feeling about magic and other worlds. He is known for writing To The Sky, a flying-themed song that was used in the movie, The Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’hoole. Another song, The Real World, talks about someone who the singer imagines having wings, in the ideal reality: “Downy feathers kiss your face/And flutter everywhere/Reality is a lovely place/But I wouldn’t wanna live there”. They talk about flying above the world, and leaving “the real world” behind.
Mette Hartmann’s beautiful, gentle song Swan, is a poem to the beauty of the swan.
Bird Girl on a Cell Phone, by the Eels, is a great song about a bird person living in the modern world, but belongs to another world. The Eels also have written a great song, just called I Like Birds, that will be familiar to most bird therians I think!
The Eagle and the Hawk, by John Denver, is a perfect hopeful song for all bird therians, simply about embracing your nature and enjoying it. “And all of those who see me, all who believe in me/Share in the freedom I feel when I fly”…
Become A Bird, by The Floating Feathers, is an indie song that is all about being a bird.
Defying Gravity from the musical Wicked has some wonderful lines, like this:
Something has changed within me
Something is not the same
I’m through with playing by the rules
Of someone else’s game
Too late for second-guessing
Too late to go back to sleep
It’s time to trust my instincts
Close my eyes: and leap!
It’s time to try
Florence and the Machine’s Bird Song is about a bird who sees the singer’s secrets, she tries to stop him, but in the end she realises the bird song is coming from inside. A great therian song.
Lark by Cygnet Wings is a great and simple song, most of it is instruments, but the four lines that it has are really powerful, almost like a meditation: “On the wings of the storm/you will be carried forth/to the nest you will return/body, breath and life secure”.
Feel It Turn by Great Big Sea is a good song for flying feelings, and discovering the self you always knew inside.
Migration by Ray Thomas is an old and poetic song about migrating birds, and the singer wishing they can follow.
Migrating Bird and Flight of the Pelican by Lal Waterson are pretty songs if you like a folk type of music.
You can also find some of these songs in my therian/otherkin music mix, Feralheart.
